Hastings pier ran into cashflow trouble when faced with unexpectedly high insurance and maintenance costs. The pier would not have won the grant had it not shown that it was competent to manage it. It had to fulfil undertakings about community engagement and local fundraising. Community ventures need relationships and networks to be able to access expertise to support management. Volunteering and community engagement do good things to the wider society in which they operate, and they do good things to the do-gooders too.
